Safe & Affirming Education Campaign (SAEC)

A grassroots effort of LGBTQA
studentsparentsteachers & allies working to fight heterosexism & violence towards LGBTQA/GNC (gender non-conforming) students in Chicago Public Schools & City Colleges by organizing through an economic, racial & gender justice framework.

In 2009, students, parents, teachers & allies of Gender JUST’s Safe and Affirming Education Campaign invited former CEO of Chicago Public Schools Ron Huberman to a public forum in order to raise awareness of the issues faced by students in our schools and our communities.  200+ community members witnessed Gender JUST youth present a series of demands to make CPS safe and affirming for all students.

After intense negotiation & direct-action, Gender JUST succeeded in expanding the Chicago Public Schools anti-discrimination policy to include gender identity & expressionAdditionally, Ron Huberman agreed to implement a grievance policy based on principles of restorative justice. In 2011, CPS has not followed through on its promise, and Gender JUST plans to continue the fight.

SAEC recently expanded into the City Colleges of Chicago in order to confront discrimination & harassment faced by LGBTQ & gender-non-conforming city college students, as well as students of color.

Members of SAEC envision a world where all are free to live & learn in an environment free of discrimination, where differences are embraced, and where empowerment replaces oppression.
