Organizational Structure

Gender JUST employs what we refer to as "Power-Based Direct-Action Community Organizing".

Power-Based : The organizing is about power; building power and altering the dynamics of power in society

Direct-Action : We directly confront those in power who are holding us down

Community Organizing : Its about bringing people together; while we may sometimes take a route that may be a little longer or less efficient, we do what we need to do to get the most people involved in our struggle

Furthermore, Gender JUST is a membership-led organization.  That means, we are fully democratic and all decisions must be led by those impacted by their results.  For instance, if we are making a decision about the Safe & Affirming Education Campaign, that decision must be democratic BUT students must lead that discussion.

There are 3 pools of members that drive Gender JUST, all of which are interdependent and are linked through a feedback loop.  At the center of the organization is the membership, to whom the organization is accountable.  The membership is made up of leaders and organizers from all the many communities which are impacted by Gender JUST's work.

The 2nd pool of members is the Leadership Team.  The Leadership Team is accountable to the membership as a whole and is made up of dedicated leaders from the membership body.  The Leadership Team is responsible for governance of the organization but can not make decisions about the organization without the approval of the membership.

The final pool of members is the Base.  The Base consists of the at-large communities to whom Gender JUST is accountable.  The membership engages the base to ensure that all the work is grounded in the experiences of the at-large communities.

The work of Gender JUST is done through Committees of members and Leadership Team members, in consultation with the Base.  Currently, there are several committees:
